Still amazed by Petra and discussing which Jordanian meals we were going to cook first, we continued our journey south west to the Red Sea. Prior to arriving, we stopped to visit the desert of Wadi Rum; filming locations for The Martian and Lawrence of Arabia.
After a quick stop for tea in a Bedouin tent filled with smells of frankincense, myrrh and slight undertones of camel poo, we climbed in the back of our guide’s truck to experience the desert of Wadi Rum. The first thing we noticed, aside from the scalding heat, was the bold contrast of colors between the red rock and sand and the cloudless blue sky. We spent the afternoon climbing sand dunes and rock features, exploring narrow canyons and Lindsay taking close up photos of camels that wandered past us.
The afternoon of desert touring complete, we left for the Red Sea with a slight regret not camping in the desert to view the night sky; next time! Spending a full day swimming in and relaxing by the Red Sea completed our Jordanian trip. The final day brought a 5 hour drive back to Amman with several stops for Arabic coffee, for which, Chad might have developed a addiction. Thank you to Firaz for safely navigating and narrating Jordan, the many hours of interesting and thought provoking conversation and for our parting gift of Sumac and Arabic coffee! Our time in Jordan was fantastic; we look forward to returning one day in the future.
