A cool misty rain started to fall just as soon as we arrived in Edinburgh and checked into our hotel – a fine Scottish welcome! We dropped our bags and left in search of a pub to plan out our time in the city. The Guilford Arms was the perfect place to enjoy a few pints, fish and chips, and a steak pie, while reading Rick Steves’ walking tours.
Edinburgh is a city made for walking, with a great mix of old and new buildings, parks and monuments. The sights along the Royal Mile were worth the crowds, especially Edinburgh Castle.
The hike up Arthur’s Seat gave us panoramic views of the city and a front row seat to watch an incoming rain storm.
For our last full day in Edinburgh, we were treated with sunny skies and warm weather. We decided to picnic on Calton Hill and follow an earlier tip from a local to have a pint in the oldest pub in Scotland. After enjoying Calton Hill and finishing our cheese and pickle sandwiches, we started the journey toward Duddingston village and the Sheep Heid Inn. Our walk took us past Hollyrood Palace and park grounds to the quaint village of Duddingston where the Sheep Heid Inn has been serving real ale for more than 600 years. A few pints, a couple games of cribbage and a nice stroll home was a great way to end our time in Edinburgh.
